Informational Message from Alert Carolina – Campus Flooding Update

Crews from Facilities Services and outside water removal companies worked through the night and all day today in response to Sunday night’s flooding following heavy rains. More than 60 buildings on campus were affected, but most had been drained, cleaned and reopened by the end of the day, including all residence halls.

Buildings in low-lying areas were most severely affected by flooding, and some remain closed for repairs:
• Student Recreation Center
• First and ground floors of Venable and Murray Halls
• Some athletic facilities at Kenan Stadium, Carmichael Arena and Fetzer Hall
Crews also cleaned roof and storm drains, cleared trees and prepared emergency generators in the event of further storms and flooding tonight. Scattered downpours are expected in the area tonight and Orange County remains under a flash flood watch until 6 p.m. Tuesday (July 2).

Individuals on campus are encouraged to check for flood-related damage and to report it to Facilities Services at (919) 962-3456.

The University continues to post updates, including from the Town of Chapel Hill, on the Alert Carolina website.

About Informational Messages: The University sends an Informational Message to inform the campus community about a situation that is not an emergency, but is expected to be of significant interest to the campus.
